Nobel Laureate Dr. Kirsty Duncan visits Vancouver Island – update

Update on details for Dr. Duncan’s visit to Nanaimo:

Tuesday, April 10^th from 7 -9 pm, Dr. Kirsty Duncan will be our special guest and featured speaker on the Nanaimo campus

of VIU – building 356 Room 109.

Dr. Duncan is currently the MP for Etobicoke North. She is the Liberal Party’s Environmental Critic and sits as a member of

the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

As a member of the IPCC she received a Nobel Peace Prize.

At this event, Kirsty will be specifically addressing climate change and its impact on human health; the impacts of thermal-

extremes; extreme events and the effects of climate change on air quality, food security, infectious disease and water quality.

Dr. Kirsty Duncan, Liberal MP and Environment Critic to Visit Nanaimo-Alberni

The Nanaimo-Alberni Federal Liberal Riding Association is pleased to present Dr. Kirsty Duncan, Liberal MP for Etobicoke North, Liberal Environment Critic, and Nobel Peace Prize winner, in a second of a series of talks on climate change.

Dr. Duncan, who served on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, an organization that won the 2007 Nobel Prize with Al Gore, will be attending our riding on the evening of Tuesday, April 10, 2012 to speak with us on climate change and human health, including the problems, the current government’s record on this issue, and opportunities moving forward and ways to take action.

New Liberalism Author Matthew Kalkman to visit Nanaimo

Author Matthew Kalkman will discuss the evolution of liberal democracy and society’s responsibility toward future generations. He will present his concept of “timeless freedoms” and apply them to Canada in a rapidly changing world. He will also touch on the topics of globalization, climate change, the UN’s responsibility to protect and the Omnibus Crime Bill C-10.

Members of the general public are invited to attend. This is a non-partisan event.

Biography: Author Matthew Kalkman’s book New Liberalism is published by Granville Island Publishing. He has an LL.B from Durham University and an Msc. from the London School of Economics (LSE). He represented LSE as a delegate at the 2009 UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. His writings on the responsibility to protect and the financial crisis have been published by the Cambridge Student Law Review and the Inter Alia Law Journal.

Seminar on Forest Industry In Mid-Vancouver Island

I am very pleased to say that Mr Robert Hunter, Forestry Manager for the Tseshaht Band in Port Alberni has agreed to meet with us on Monday, 20 Feb, 2012.

Based upon feedback from various folks and the availability of meeting rooms, it has been decided that this seminar will take place at 7 PM in the ‘Red Cedar Room’, at the:

This is an excellent opportunity to learn first hand from an expert practitioner in the mid-island forest industry. As I am sure that you
can all appreciate, forestry is one of most important and somewhat controversial natural resources in the Nanaimo-Port Alberni area. As such, I see this seminar as an excellent opportunity to connect closer with our Riding.

I hope that everyone has the opportunity to attend this gathering. The meeting is open to all interested, so feel free to bring a friend.

Open Meeting
Nanaimo-Alberni Liberal Riding Association
March 4th, 2012 2pm-4pm

This is your personal invitation to an “Open Meeting” for the Nanaimo-Alberni Liberal Riding Association. Come and meet fellow Liberals in our riding and voice your opinion about how we can improve our efforts here in Nanaimo-Alberni.

The meeting will be located at Nanaimo’s ABC Country Restaurant located at 6671 Mary Ellen Drive. We will start with a shortened monthly Executive Meeting starting at 2pm, then take a short break close to 3pm and use the remaining time to listen to you, the members of our association, about what and where we should be focusing our efforts.

If at all possible, please bring any of your ‘non-member’ friends or family who might be interested in our association, as this will be an ideal environment for them to come and see what the Nanaimo-Alberni Liberals have to offer. There will be refreshments made available and family members of all ages are welcome to attend.
